The Challenge
Brand and product piracy has become increasingly important in recent years. It causes the companies concerned significant problems in the form of lost sales and devaluation of protected brands. There are various approaches to successfully defending against brand and product pirates, including customs border confiscation. In view of the enormous flow of goods, the possibilities for the customs authorities to find brand-infringing goods or counterfeits are limited. It is therefore all the more important to support the customs authorities as well as possible and to work out the special features of the originals and industrial property rights as well as possible when setting up the application. That is when Z I E R H U T * I P comes into play.
The Case
Z I E R H U T * I P received notification from the Lithuanian customs that about 800 Hamann wheel rims were to be imported via the port of Klaipeda. The designs were copied 1: 1, even the logo was pressed in. Immediately the seizure was arranged by customs. The importer was obliged to destroy the rims and to bear the costs. The confiscated rims were destroyed under the supervision of customs and the Z I E R H U T * I P. Of course ee were on site and documented the destruction. Amusing anecdote: The Chinese manufacturer answered he “accidentally” stamped HAMANN on the rims and asked to return the wheels to him. Around 800 rims made of approx. 10 tons of aluminum were destroyed with a market value of approx. € 500,000.
The Result
Working with Z I E R H U T * I P , Hamann Motorsport has been able to tackle the problem head-on. We had our sights on this importer for a long time – so far we have only been able to delete their offers on the European online marketplaces as well as possible. Now we know the manufacturer and are taking action against it in China with our local representatives and with the help of the Chinese government the manufacturer and the importer haveo suffered great damage.
